Dear Photograph,My grandparents shared an astonishing ability to blend intensity and laughter in everything they did. I realize how much their dark, Germanic sense of humor is embedded in my own character. I remember that afternoon in 1995, when they posed for the camera, enacting a present retroactively shaped by a future in which they would be gone. I appreciated their idea for that photo then, and I felt as if I shared a nice laugh with them this afternoon when I bicycled to the cemetery to snap this Dear Photograph.Andy
